CRYSTALS have long fascinated us with their captivating colours and extraordinary forms.
Throughout history, these beautiful stones have been coveted as ornaments and adornments.
Our early ancestors intuitively knew that the stones had “magical” powers and regarded them as gifts from the spirits in the heavens. From the ancient civilisations in the East to the indigenous people of the Americas, crystals have been used for generations for healing purposes. It is said that one-third of the Earth’s crust is made of crystals and they are formed over millions of years, containing the wisdom of the worlds.
The first recorded evidence of “healing” crystals is on an Egyptian papyrus dated around 1600BC which gives instructions for the use of crystals, therapeutically. The Egyptians believed that illnesses can be banished by wearing necklaces of lapis lazuli, red jasper and malachite.
In the 16th Century, wealthy Europeans took ground crystal powders as curative medicines. English apothecary and author Sir John Hill wrote in 1746 that it was the minerals in crystals that account for their healing properties. For example, copper reduces swelling and inflammation, so malachite, which has a high concentration of copper, aids aching joints and muscles.
It was not till the 1980s that Marcel Vogel, an American research scientist discovered that the perfect structure of crystals results in its ability to store, amplify and repair subtle energy. In modern medicine, crystals are used because they are piezoelectric (they generate electricity and light when compressed or struck).
Ultrasound machines harness this property by using a piezoelectric crystal to produce sound waves. A tightly focused beam of ultrasound can cauterise wounds deep within the body and blast tumours apart without the need for invasive procedures.
Practitioners of Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, both over 5,000 years old, still use crystals that appear in formulas in ancient texts in their prescriptions. Crystals heal holistically by realigning subtle energies and dissolving disease at its root cause. They work through vibration, rebalancing the auric field surrounding the physical body and activate the chakras.
States of physical and psychological diseases can be alleviated when the chakras are brought back to alignment. Crystal therapist Tristen Churn says: “Crystals come into our possession when we need them or when our vibration requires their interaction. They are tools we can use to overcome certain challenges in life by removing blocks within our mind, to increase our awareness and protect us from harm.
“Crystals vibrate at a high frequency and their vibrations enhance harmony in their immediate environment by restoring the energy fields of people to their optimal states. Different crystals have specific functions based on their therapeutic properties and colours.”
He starts a therapy session by having a conversation with the client to address the client’s concern. Together, they acknowledge the thoughts and emotions relating to the issue. The therapist places crystals around or on the client’s body to correct the energy imbalances and release past trauma. He will also share some simple ways the client can use crystals regularly to improve daily life.
Each regular therapy session is between 60 and 90 minutes. All information about the client is confidential. Clients have reported a deep sense of peace and relief after a crystal therapy session. Churn adds: “The benefits of crystal therapy are far and wide.
Clients come for crystal therapy because of various reasons such as work-induced stress, anxiety, depression, aches and pains, and migraine headaches, to speed up recovery after surgery, grief and emotional trauma.” Churn conducts private crystal therapy sessions and crystal workshops in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
He started becoming interested in crystals when he realised that he had the ability to communicate with them and to decipher messages that they relay to him. Over the years, he learned about the use and the properties of crystals through reading books and by experimenting with them on himself.
Churn will be conducting a crystal meditation using clear quartz at The Violet Flame in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur at 7.30pm this Friday.
Meditating with clear quartz helps us attain mental clarity, release emotional stress and bring the entire body back into balance. The fee is RM33 per person.
