CHAKRA is a Sanskrit word for wheel. Chakras are the basis of ancient Eastern healing systems. The chakras are spinning wheels of energy that lie at specific points in our subtle body. They are organising centres which receive, assimilate and transmit life energies throughout our system. They record everything about you and function as an energetic database which stores information.

Chakras interact with our physical body through the nervous system and the endocrine system which governs the glands, hormones and organs. The seven primary chakras are aligned with the spinal column from the top of the head to the base of the spine.

Each chakra has a specific function and characteristic that corresponds with specific aspects of consciousness. They are channels in which emotional, mental and spiritual force flows into physical expression. Our attitude and belief systems enter into the chakras and create our state of being.

Metaphysically, chakras symbolise the path of an evolving consciousness from primitive to enlightened man. Understanding the chakra system enables us to understand the relationship between our body and our consciousness — our relationships, our strengths and weaknesses, who and what we are in the world.

We will begin a journey through the chakras beginning with the Base chakra all the way to the Crown chakra.

Root Chakra

The first chakra is located at the base of the spine. It is red in colour and is connected to the earth element. The root chakra develops until one is seven years old. It stores everything a person sees, hears and experiences during the first seven years and shapes the person you are.

The root chakra is associated with basic and instinctive qualities of survival. It is connected to one’s inherited beliefs, physical identity and self-preservation.

A person with a healthy root chakra trusts and accepts others. He feels secure in the world with a strong desire for life. Physical connections to this chakra are in the skeletal and muscular system. Symptoms of an imbalanced root chakra are piles, back pain, depression and constipation. The symptoms are by-products of fear and holding on to beliefs that no longer serve.

Sacral Chakra

The second chakra is located at the genital area. It is orange in colour and connected to the water element. The sacral chakra develops between the ages of seven and 14 when we are exploring emotions through connecting with each other.

The sacral chakra is associated with the reproductive organs, our sexuality and creativity. It determines how you feel about intimacy, your relationships with others, communication, money and business.

A fertile, creative mind and a positive sexual attitude are connected to a well-balanced sacral chakra. Issues in this chakra manifest as urinary tract infections, menstrual pain, menopausal complaints, low sexual desire and bladder problems. The blocks are caused by clinging to emotional baggage from the past.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The third chakra is located behind the navel. It is yellow in colour and connected to the fire element. The solar plexus chakra develops between the ages of 14 and 21 when we learn to take a stand in the world with a strong sense of self-esteem.

The solar plexus chakra is also known as the seat of fire within the body. It governs personal power and relates to how we present ourselves in the world. This chakra governs the mental plane, which can be used positively to create your desired reality.

An open solar plexus chakra allows one to be self-empowered, confident without needing to exert control over others. Emotional or mental stress results in problems such as digestive problems, liver disease, diabetes, eating disorders and addictions. Choose love instead of fear in every moment to keep this chakra balanced.

Heart Chakra

The fourth chakra is located in the middle of the chest. It is green in colour and connected to the air element. The heart chakra develops between the ages of 21 and 28.

One of the most difficult journeys in a person’s lifetime is the journey from the third to the fourth chakra — moving from love of power to power of love. By evolving into a loving person by opening your heart and cultivating compassion, your focus shifts to a sense of community and unconditional love.

Imbalance in this chakra results in breathing difficulties like asthma and bronchitis, heart conditions and breast cancer. The key to an open heart is the realm of true forgiveness.

Throat Chakra

The fifth chakra is located in the base of the throat. It is turquoise in colour and develops between the ages of 29 and 35. The throat chakra is the power centre that manifest on earth according to the choices we make. Governing our self-expression, this chakra emphasises the importance of speaking authentically and consciously ensuring that our thoughts, words and deeds are aligned.

Sore throats, laryngitis and thyroid problems can be due to suppression of one’s expression or from speaking with ignorance. Expressing your true feelings and thoughts from your heart will keep this chakra healthy.

Third Eye Chakra

The sixth chakra is located between the brows and symbolises the spiritual eye. It is indigo in colour and develops between the ages of 36 and 42. The third eye chakra is the centre of illumination connecting to the light within you. It is associated with the mind and the development of intuition as well as insight.

Blocks in this chakra are due to fear of the inner self or introspection and can cause brain tumours, paranoia, nervous behaviour, migraine and visual problems. Seeing clearly with compassion without discrimination is crucial for one’s spiritual growth.

Crown Chakra

The seventh chakra is located at the top of the head. It is violet in colour and develops between the ages of 43 and beyond.

When this chakra is open, you will be connected to the Divine in a state of total surrender enabling you to receive continuous guidance from the Source. It is a state of grace when one’s actions are selfless and for the greater good of all.

Chronic fatigue, dementia and Parkinson’s Disease are connected to the loss of purpose or meaning of life. Maintaining an attitude of gratitude and absolute trust that everything is in perfect order ensures that the crown chakra is spinning at its optimal speed.
